Britten Norman Bn 2a 26 Islander
The Defender began development in the 1970s as an armored version of the Islander. Since then, the product has been extensively developed. Forty years after its maiden flight in June 1965, the Britten-Norman BN-2 Island is still in production and more than 800 of the more than 1,250 aircraft delivered are in service. The robust and easy-to-use design is used in numerous applications, including air taxis, charter flights, and scheduled services; sowing; water explosion; VIP/executive transactions; photo-recognition/surveillance; air ambulance; bribery; and law enforcement.
John Britten and Desmond Norman, aerospace engineers who met at the de Havilland Aviation Technical School, founded Britten-Norman Ltd. in 1963 and opened a shop in Bembridge on Britain's south coast.
Recognizing the need for small utility aircraft and with a light aircraft to their name, they developed this simple and inexpensive piston twin to carry more than six passengers. They focused on minimal capital cost for short haul operations, while combining short haul operations with good construction.
The BN-2 Islander began as a steel cloth design before converting to a light alloy monocoque. The simple configuration involved a tall, flat parallel-chorded wing, a rectangular fuselage cross-section, and fixed landing gear. Five benches can accommodate 10 people (including the pilot), and each row enters through its own door. The base price was £17,500 ($42,000 in the mid-1960s).

The prototype flew on June 13, 1965, powered by 210 hp Rolls-Royce/Continental IO-360-B engines, and was seen four days later at the Paris Air Force Base. The company later replaced the engines with more powerful 260 hp Lycoming O-540-Es (on longer wings on longer wings) to provide single-engine take-off operations. Seeking more capability, in 1968 B-N flew the BN-2E Islander Super variant, which was stretched, added an extra row of seats, and powered by 350-horsepower Lycoming O-720 engines, but not certified. In 1971, B-N introduced a heavier, 6,950 lb-ft Defender military variant at the Paris Air Force Base, providing complex points for stores or weapons, electronic or medium-range equipment. A nose-mounted radar was introduced and the Defender found a ready market in over 20 countries.
Continued growth came at a cost, and within weeks of Defender's launch, financial problems led to the bankruptcy of B-N Ltd (bankruptcy protection) in October 1971. In August 1972 Ferry became part of the Britten holding company. -Norman (FB-N).

Britten and Norman left the business in 1974, but development continued with the 6,600 lb-ft BN-2A-30 amphibian. Twin floats are attached to the car legs and the fuselage is retractable landing gear.
In 1976 UK propeller manufacturer Dowty used the Rotol Islander to address future noise laws. Mounted on wing-mounted pylons, Lycoming IO-540 engines drove seven-blade fans in 48-inch-diameter canopies. Tests have shown a noise reduction of 20 dB (up to 65 dB), as well as increased thrust and reduced emissions.
